Airport arrival decisions

Logan arrival: the free Silver Line trip is not a citywide transit pass

Choose between Logan's Silver Line and Blue Line connection by your onward destination. Understand what is free, where the shuttle fits and which payment instructions still need checking.

Start with the stop nearest your destination

Before leaving arrivals, identify the part of Boston you actually need to reach. An airport-to-downtown description does not mean the bus stops beside every hotel. Mark the onward station, the last walking or vehicle connection and the current service alerts in your journey plan.

Massport describes the Silver Line SL1 as an airport connection to South Station, where onward Red Line travel is available. Its ground-access report also distinguishes the Blue Line route, which uses a free airport shuttle between the terminals and Airport station. Those are two different journeys, not two names for a train inside the terminal.

Know the boundary of the free arrival benefit

Massport confirms that boarding SL1 at Logan Airport is free and includes a transfer to the Red Line at South Station. That can make the airport arrival leg useful for a Red Line destination, but it does not turn every later bus, ferry or return trip into a free journey.

Keep the directions separate when planning your departure flight. A free ride from the airport is not evidence that your accommodation-to-airport journey has the same fare treatment. Check the operator's current instructions for the actual route, rather than reversing an arrival itinerary and assuming its price stays unchanged.

A free terminal shuttle is not the whole Blue Line trip

Massport's on-airport buses connect terminals with the Blue Line Airport station, rental-car center and water-transportation dock. Follow Ground Transportation and Shuttle Bus signs at the terminal curb, then check the listed destination of the bus you intend to board.

The free shuttle gets you to the transit connection; it does not establish the fare for the onward service. Routes and operating windows differ. For an early or late flight, check the current shuttle and rail information together and allow time for that terminal-to-station transfer.

Read today's payment instructions before choosing a card

MBTA's Charlie website says contactless Tap to Ride is available while other features of its new payment system remain in testing. A contactless bank card or phone wallet, an existing CharlieCard and a new test card should not be treated as interchangeable products.

Choose the payment method and fare product for the service you will actually use. This article does not quote a universal fare, promise a daily cap or claim that one card covers every commuter-rail or ferry journey. Recheck the current MBTA terms if you add those modes to your airport arrival.
