A day in New York, with time to enjoy it

Explore one neighborhood at a time, allowing for travel, lunch and sunset.

New York Waterfront and Brooklyn Bridge at sunset

Morning: start near your accommodation

On your first day, get to know the area around your accommodation. Find somewhere for breakfast, locate the station entrance and plan your way back. Check that your phone shows New York local time before setting out.

If you are jet-lagged, keep the itinerary flexible. Schedule activities that need reservations for a time when you expect to feel more alert, and leave room to rest.

Daytime: group stops by neighborhood

Group nearby stops together to avoid repeated transfers. Distance on a map does not tell you the full travel time: traffic lights, entrances, luggage storage and queues also take time.

When booking lunch or an activity, allow time to finish the previous stop and travel to the next one. A gap between reservations is not necessarily enough for the journey.

Evening: find a place to enjoy the changing light

Choose a waterfront viewpoint that is easy to reach and return from. Use the day’s sunset time to plan your arrival, and get there early enough to watch the light change.

NYC Ferry publishes routes and schedules on its official website. If you plan to include a ferry trip, check where to board and leave the ferry, confirm the last useful sailing, and have another way back in mind.

Night: Consider the return trip together with the next day

After dinner, check out the route and service announcements back to your accommodation. If fellow travelers have different physical abilities and interests, they can agree on a meeting point and time, so that everyone does not have to complete the entire journey.

If there is a flight or activity the next morning, the evening itinerary should include time for packing luggage and resting. When sending messages across time zones, remember to check the other person’s date to avoid mistaking your own night for the other person’s night.
