New Year & Countdowns

When Does New Year Arrive Around the World? Follow the Time Zones

At the same instant, places may still be on different dates. Choose your cities and year to plan your own global New Year route.

New Year travels like a relay across time zones. Some people are already having breakfast on New Year’s Day while others are still preparing dinner on New Year’s Eve. Whether you want to count down with family far away or watch several cities welcome the new year in one night, start by looking at the cities, dates, and times together.

When do five cities reach New Year 2027?

Each city reaches January 1 at its own local midnight. The local and UTC times on each row describe the same instant.

Every city has its own midnight

Here, ‘New Year’ means the local civil calendar moving from midnight on December 31 to January 1. At the same moment around the world, city clocks can show different hours and even different years. So do not just say ‘see you at midnight’; specify which city’s midnight you mean.

For an online gathering, first choose the city and year everyone will follow, then convert that time to each person’s location. Including the date and city in the message is clearer than giving a time alone.

Start by comparing familiar cities

Under current time-zone rules, Tokyo uses UTC+09:00 and Taipei uses UTC+08:00, so Tokyo welcomes January 1 an hour before Taipei. When the new year begins in Tokyo, it is still 11 p.m. on December 31 in Taipei.

London uses UTC+00:00 in January, so midnight on January 1 there corresponds to 8 a.m. that same day in Taipei. These examples include the date because the easiest part of a New Year time conversion to miss is the previous or following day.

Remember that time differences can change

Some regions change their clocks for daylight saving time, so the time difference between two cities may vary by season. For a New Year plan, use the rules for the target year and local date of January 1; do not apply a difference you remember from a summer trip.

A single country can span several time zones, so choose a city when checking rather than entering only the country name. The IANA Time Zone Database records UTC offsets and clock-change rules around the world and is updated when policies change. If you made plans well in advance, check them again as the date approaches.

Make your own New Year checklist

Add the cities you want to follow to a world clock, then set reminders in the order they welcome the new year. If you use a countdown tool, confirm that it targets midnight on January 1 in that city, and include the city and year when sharing it so everyone knows what the countdown ends at.

Time zones tell you when midnight arrives. For fireworks, concerts, livestreams, and extended transport service, check announcements from the organizers or transport operators. Leave gaps between events, and you will have time to wish people in different places a happy new year.
